Ok, most of the people that know me would call me a "gadget guy". So one would think, with all of the cool new tech available for cyclists that I would be in my glory...
I bought a "smart" trainer, bluetooth cadence, heart rate monitor, Magellan Cyclo315 computer, and a Zwift membership.
Problem 1. If you buy a bike with disk brakes, you need to buy an adapter before you can put your bike into ANY trainer.
Problem 2. The width of the adapter is more important than one would think....The first Smart Trainer I purchased, the Tacx Vortex Smart Trainer was too narrow for my bike, even after two different adapters were purchase. I sent the trainer back and went into my local store and bought the new CycleOps Magnus smart trainer. This one is just barely able to fit my bike, but at least I was in business.
Next was to get the trainer to talk to all the peripherals....The cycling computer deserves its own blog with the issues it posed, so I will skip that here...I was able to get the cadence and the heart rate monitor to play nicely with the trainer...finally.
So, one would think that all I would need to do now would be to hop on the trainer, open up the Zwift program, and off I go......
There is a certain place in hell for programs that crash 1.5 hours into a workout...My rational mind knows that I did the work, but my "achiever" was driven nuts that I didn't get the credit for it...
I have also found a whole new level of obsession, trying to get my stats downloaded to Strava, so that all of my friends can see that I am training hard for this ride.
At the end of the day, I need to remember that I am doing this to raise funds and awareness for Myeloma research....I will indeed keep pedaling.
